It’s all a numbers game

A few weeks ago I was chatting with my team lead and joked about being Wonder Woman. He emphatically agreed and was serious, which of course made me uncomfortable. I check the stats on a regular basis. I know that I am producing a high volume of quality work. I’m ok joking about that, but not when someone is serious about it. I’d like to think I’m too humble to seriously brag.

Out of that conversation, as part of my deflecting, was mentioning that “I know the game and know how to play it. It’s a numbers game.” The lead said they wished others realized this.

It’s funny how stats can easily turn to gamification but that isn’t used more in business. I’ve been mulling this over a bit, and understand that not everyone can grasp metrics, analyze data, or are motivated in that way. But it really is one way to be successful – know the game, know how it is scored, and do your best (including sometimes bending the rules) to get the best score. Bingo – you win.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses. We all have our comfort zones which can include both strengths and weaknesses. Being honest with yourself about all this, and being able to plaster on ones professional face and get shit done… I think that is just the core of success in business, and possibly life.
